We propose a pivotal method for estimating high-dimensional sparse linear regression models, where the overall number of regressors $p$ is large, possibly much larger than $n$, but only $s$ regressors are significant. The method is a modification of the lasso, called the square-root lasso. The method is pivotal in that it neither relies on the knowledge of the standard deviation $\sigma$ or nor does it need to pre-estimate $\sigma$. Moreover, the method does not rely on normality or...

Cylindrically symmetric inhomogeneous string cosmological models are investigated in presence of string fluid as a source of matter. To get the three types of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations we assume $A = f(x)k(t)$, $B = g(x)\ell(t)$ and $C = h(x)\ell(t)$. Some physical and geometric aspects of the models are discussed.

The spectrum of an isotropic extragalactic $\gamma$-ray background (EGB) has been measured by the Fermi-LAT telescope at high latitudes. Two new models for the EGB are derived from the subtraction of unresolved point sources and extragalactic diffuse processes, which could explain from 30% to 70% of the Fermi-LAT EGB. Within the hypothesis that the two residual EGBs are entirely due to the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles in the Galactic halo, we obtain $conservative$ upper limits on...

The Gaia satellite will observe about one billion stars and other point-like sources. The astrometric core solution will determine the astrometric parameters (position, parallax, and proper motion) for a subset of these sources, using a global solution approach which must also include a large number of parameters for the satellite attitude and optical instrument. The accurate and efficient implementation of this solution is an extremely demanding task, but crucial for the outcome of the...

We consider a certain metric on the space of all convex compacta in $\R^{n}$, introduced by A. Pli\'s. The set of strictly convex compacta is a complete metric subspace of the metric space of convex compacta with respect to this metric. We present some applications of this metric to the problems of set-valued analysis, in particular we estimate the distance between two compact sets with respect to this metric and to the Hausdorff metric.

In this short paper, I present a few theorems on sentences of arithmetic which are related to Yablo's Paradox as G\"odel's first undecidable sentence was related to the Liar paradox. In particular, I consider two different arithemetizations of Yablo's sentences: one resembling G\"odel's arithmetization of the Liar, with the negation outside of the provability predicate, one resembling Jeroslow's undecidable sentence, with negation inside. Both kinds of arithmetized Yablo sentence are...

This paper provides a unifying and simplifying approach to Bruhat order in which the usual Bruhat order, parabolic Bruhat order, and Bruhat order for symmetric pairs are shown to have combinatorially analogous and relatively simple descriptions. Such analogies are valuable as they permit the study of PGB and KGB by reducing to BGB rather than by introducing additional machinery. A concise definition for reduced expressions and a simple proof of the exchange condition for PGB are provided as...

We determine the Lagrangian monodromy group L(T) and the smooth monodromy group S(T) of a Clifford torus T in the symplectic 4-space. We show that L(T) is isomorphic to the infinite dihedral group, and S(T) is generated by three reflections. We give explicit formulas for both groups. We also show that if a Lagrangian torus is smoothly isotopic to a Clifford torus then the smooth isotopy can be chosen to be Lagrangian outside of a disc.

We introduce a new technique for imaging the polarized radio sky using interferometric data. The new approach, which we call Faraday synthesis, combines aperture and rotation measure synthesis imaging and deconvolution into a single algorithm. This has several inherent advantages over the traditional two-step technique, including improved sky plane resolution, fidelity, and dynamic range. In addition, the direct visibility- to Faraday-space imaging approach is a more sound foundation on which...

We discuss laser dressed dipolar and Van der Waals interactions between atoms and polar molecules, so that a cold atomic gas with laser admixed Rydberg levels acts as a designed reservoir for both elastic and inelastic collisional processes. The elastic scattering channel is characterized by large elastic scattering cross sections and repulsive shields to protect from close encounter collisions. In addition, we discuss a dissipative (inelastic) collision where a spontaneously emitted photon...

Motivated by recent experiments, we study theoretically the full counting statistics of radiation emitted below the threshold of parametric resonance in a Josephson junction circuit. In contrast to most optical systems, a significant part of emitted radiation can be collected and converted to an output signal. This permits studying the correlations of the radiation. To quantify the correlations, we derive a closed expression for full counting statistics in the limit of long measurement times....

IDENTIKIT was originally developed as a fast approximate scheme for modeling the tidal morphology and kinematics of disk galaxy encounters and mergers. In this form, it was first used to implement an interactive modeling tool for galaxy collisions; tests with artificial data showed that the morphology and kinematics of merging galaxies strongly constrain their initial conditions. This tool is now being applied to real galaxies. More recently, IDENTIKIT has been used to develop a mapping from...

A key component of the data processing for Gaia is the astrometric core solution, which must implement an efficient and accurate numerical algorithm to solve the resulting, extremely large least-squares problem. The Astrometric Global Iterative Solution (AGIS) is a framework that allows to implement a range of different iterative...

Let H(f)(x)=\int_{(0,infty)^d} f(v) E_{x}(v) d\nu(v), be the multivariable Hankel transform, where E_{x}(v)=\prod_{k=1}^d (x_k v_k)^{-a_k+1/2} J_{a_k-1/2}(x_k v_k), d\nu(v)=v^a dv, a=(a_1,...,a_d). We give sufficient conditions on a bounded continuous function m(v) which guarantee that the operator H(m Hf) is bounded on L^p(d\nu) and of weak-type (1,1), or bounded on the Hardy space H^1((0,infty)^d, d\nu) in the sense of Coifman-Weiss.

In this paper, we introduce a new model of spinor cosmology containing both Ricci scalar and the non minimally coupled spinor fields in its action. We have investigated the cosmology with both isotropy and anisotropy, where the equations of motion of FRW and Bianchi type-I spacetimes have been derived and solved numerically. Finally the quantization of these models through Wheeler-De Witt (WD) wave...

We prove that a K-approximate subgroup of an arbitrary torsion-free nilpotent group can be covered by a bounded number of cosets of a nilpotent subgroup of bounded rank, where the bounds are explicit and depend only on K. The result can be seen as a nilpotent analogue to Freiman's dimension lemma.

In program debugging, reproducibility of bugs is a key requirement. Unfortunately, bugs in concurrent programs are notoriously difficult to reproduce compared to their sequential counterparts. This is because bugs due to concurrency happen under very specific thread schedules and the likelihood of taking such corner-case schedules during regular testing is very low. We propose concurrent breakpoints, a light-weight and programmatic way to make a concurrency bug reproducible. We describe a...

The genus of the iso-density contours is a robust measure of the topology of large scale structure, and it is relatively insensitive to nonlinear gravitational evolution, galaxy bias and redshift-space distortion. We show that the growth of density fluctuations is scale-dependent even in the linear regime in some modified gravity theories, which opens a new possibility of testing the theories observationally. We propose to use the genus of the iso-density contours, an intrinsic measure of the...

The exact factorized ground state of a heterogeneous (ferrimagnetic) spin model which is composed of two spins ($\rho, \sigma$) has been presented in detail. The Hamiltonian is not necessarily translational invariant and the exchange couplings can be competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic arbitrarily between different sub-lattices to build many practical models such as dimerized and tetramerized materials and ladder compounds. The condition to get a factorized ground state is...

Linear differential algebraic groups (LDAGs) measure differential algebraic dependencies among solutions of linear differential and difference equations with parameters, for which LDAGs are Galois groups. The differential representation theory is a key to developing algorithms computing these groups. In the rational representation theory of algebraic groups, one starts with SL(2) and tori to develop the rest of the theory. In this paper, we give an explicit description of differential...

This geometry has been designed to achieve efficient (> 50 %) single photon extraction into a near-Gaussian shaped far-field pattern, modest (~10x) Purcell enhancement of the radiative rate, and a spectral bandwidth of a few nanometers. The system is composed of three layers: a prism, a thin metal film, and a hybrid dielectric consisting of EIT atoms and a background substance. A probe and a coupling laser beam are input. Corresponding analytical formulas are derived for the cases when one or both of the laser beams excite surface plasmon polaritons at the metal/dielectric interface. Under resonance...

In this article, we introduce iterative deterministic equivalents as a novel technique for the performance analysis of communication systems whose channels are modeled by complex combinations of independent random matrices. This technique extends the deterministic equivalent approach for the study of functionals of large random matrices to a broader class of random matrix models which naturally arise as channel models in wireless communications. We present two specific applications: First, we...

By using a purely analytic method, we prove the continuity of the non-local operator $L$ from the Bessel potential space $H^\sigma_p$ to $L_p$, and the unique strong solvability of the corresponding non-local elliptic equations in $L_p$ spaces. As a byproduct, we also obtain interior $L_p$-estimates. The novelty of our results is...

In this paper, a compensated compactness framework is established for sonic-subsonic approximate solutions to the $n$-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for steady irrotational flow that may contain stagnation points. This compactness framework holds provided that the approximate solutions are uniformly bounded and satisfy $H^{-1}_{loc}(\Omega)$ compactness conditions. As illustration, we show the existence of sonic-subsonic weak solution to n-dimensional$(n\geq 2)$ Euler equations for...

The goal of this paper is to explain certain experimentally observed properties of the (cuspidal) spectrum and its associated automorphic forms (Maass waveforms) on the congruence subgroup $\Gamma_{0}(9)$. The first property is that the spectrum possesses multiplicities in the so-called new part, where it was previously believed to be simple. The second property is that the spectrum does not contain any "genuinely new" eigenvalues, in the sense that all eigenvalues of $\Gamma_{0}(9)$...

Bogoliubov's theory states that self-interaction effects in Bose-Einstein condensates produce a characteristic linear dispersion at low momenta. One of the curious features of Bogoliubov's theory is that the new quasiparticles in the system are linear combinations of creation and destruction operators of the bosons. In exciton-polariton condensates, this gives the possibility of directly observing the negative branch of the Bogoliubov dispersion in the photoluminescence (PL) emission. Here we...
